Poor quality housebuilders

Launching CABE's (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) latest annual report this week, chief executive Richard Simmons warns that organisations need to work harder to ensure good design.

Richard Simmons said:

'Over the past year, too often we have seen the drive for good design within organisations coming down to one individual. It seems the role of design champions is becoming even more critical as big organisations become more risk averse. Our schools and housing audits show how much poor design still gets planning permission - evidence that the design champion is not being listened to.'

However, CABE's report shows huge inconsistencies in the quality of the built environment as a result of the failure of organisations to embed the drive for design quality in their culture and procurement systems. CABE audits found that a mere six per cent of new housing qualifies as good or very good and only six out of the 11 volume housebuilders have a design champion.
