Looking for a period gem? Well stop it. Graham Norwood discovers the growing trend for buying brand new.

When you look at the cranes on London's skyline and the ever-burgeoning building sites, you could be forgiven for thinking new homes dominate the capital's housing stock - but they don't.

Figures from the Greater London Assembly show that while 20,000 new homes have been built on average each year for the past two decades, so-called period properties dominate the landscape. Sixty per cent of the capital's homes were built before 1939 and about 80 per cent before 1975.
