A homeowner has been left unable to sell her £415,000 semi-detached house because her next door neighbour owns half of her bedroom.
Samantha Sweeney, 45, of Colchester, Essex, discovered the boundary line oddity over an area of 90 sq ft which overhangs the shared driveway between their houses.
The insurance worker was shocked to learn of the quirk, which became clear in Land Registry documents when she tried to sell the house for £375,000 last May.
She claimed Persimmon Homes did not point out the split ownership when she bought the four-bedroom property in 2006 – and the error has cost her a buyer.
Ms Sweeney told Sun reporters Lauren Probert and Rob Pattinson: ‘It’s disgusting.
‘Persimmon should have sorted it then. The fact they also recommended the solicitor they now claim ‘missed’ this stinks.
‘Persimmon have sold the land to my neighbour, then built my house and sold that portion of the land again. That’s not on.’
Ms Sweeney bought the new build home for £285,000 and it features three floors with an en suite to a master bedroom, car port and garage.
Persimmon was said to have recommended the conveyancers, David Lowe and Co, of Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, but the company no longer exists.
A spokesman for Persimmon told MailOnline today: ‘Regrettably, an error was made with the plans in 2006 which has caused this problem.
‘Since this error came to light last year, we have been working with the customers and the Land Registry to resolve the matter.
‘We will continue to work with all parties and are confident the matter will be resolved.’
