Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Brilliant!
I thought this was an excellent book - highly realistic but interesting characters and a superb gallows humour that pops up from time to time.

The author doesn't go for the gratuitous gore that some authors do - although the crimes in the story are quite horrendous the gory detail isn't overdone. The book doesn't need it, and it's good that the author is confident enough to realise that.

As with the first book, Cold Granite, a number of storyline threads run concurrently and you wonder which will merge before the end of the book and which will remain unrelated. It makes for an interesting conclusion, and there's even a twist in the tail for one of them.

I would recommend reading this series of books in the correct sequence; although this book could be read as a stand-alone novel, it develops the characters first introduced in Cold Granite which is part of the beauty of it.

I already have Broken Skin and I'm looking forward to reading it - I'm just reading something different first, for the sake of variety.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Pretty Good Thriller
A prostitute is found murdered in Aberdeen's Red Light district. When, a few days later, a second body is found in the woods, in the Aberdeen suburbs, it starts to look like a serial killer is on the loose. To make matters worse there is an arsonist at large , torching houses and flats, while the occupants are sleeping inside.

This is the first Stuart MacBride novel that I have read, and I thought that it was pretty good. The storyline is very gritty, and gruesome in places, but kept me interested throughout. The main characters, Logan, Steel etc., came across as quite believable, as they make a few mistakes along the way. Not too sure what the people of Aberdeen make of it all, though, as it makes their city look very crime ridden!

Three and a half stars for this novel, and I'll be sure to check out more books from this author.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - As bad as the first
After reading Cold Granite I swore I'd never read another Stuart Macbride book as it was just so awful. However having bought that and this at the same time, and my wife being busy with what I had planned to read next, I gave this a go.

I shouldn't have bothered. I thought that maybe, just maybe, we'd learn a little more about Logan McRea - but no. He's still a paper-thin character thoroughly devoid of interest or motivation. We still have sweets mentioned every time we meet Insch and smoking every time we meet Steel. Writing doesn't get much lazier.

The plot is a mishmash of poor planning and sleep-inducing boredom.

Never again! I only gave it 1 star because I couldn't give it zero.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best of the four
Awesome twists and turns. Unguessable and really cleverly crafted plot.

DI Steel comes into her own.

Writing this having read the first four Logan books and it's the best, although not by much as they are all great!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - dying light
Enjoyed Cold Granite tremendously so was looking forwards to reading the next installment. It was another great read I really love the story line and all the characters. Hope this is going to be one of many Logan Mcrae novels.
