![]() Rating: - Tolerably entertaining with good principles behind it.For the readers of the 'Evil Genius' series, this book must surely be the most sought-after. Everyone loves electronic surveillance (radio bugs especially) and this book provides ample examples from all areas of private-eye level snoop toys. Explainations are clear, schematics are accurate and the possible uses of the "toys" themsevles are hinted at in a way that inspires some thinking on the part of the reader. Trouble is, the engineering behind many of these gadgets is fairly crude. The 'stereo bionic ear' for example is a very simple design (little more than a dual op-amp and a couple of standard electret mic elements). If you want a 'how-to' book detailing exactly how to build working spy-gadgets, this is the book for you. If you want to improve/upgrade some of the projects in this book to really top-notch standards, read "The Basement Buggers Bible", which is a godsend to the nosy-parker and electronic engineer alike. Rating: - Awesome!I have a few other Evil Genius books and not very impressed with them. I also have "Atomic Zombie's Bicycle Builder's (and Customizer's) Bonanza" by the same authors and was surprised on their web site www.atomiczombie.com to see that they just came out with this spy gadgets book. Evil Genius books generally tend to be too complicated, require parts that you can't usually find, too expensive to build or not very well written. This one, however, stands out as being a great book. I saw Mission Impossible 3 recently and have to admit have always been intrigued by the world of spies and the cool gadgets those special agents use. I've always been a James Bond fan, too. With 101 Spy Gadgets, you can really build your own spy-like toys from scratch and you learn how to hack things like outdoor motion sensor lights, digital cameras, VCRs, web cameras, microscopes, telescopes, baby monitors and so on to make some pretty cool stuff! One of my favourites are the laser gadgets and the mini video controlled robot at the end of the book. Imagine using a wok cover to amplify distant sounds and a tiny audio bug to monitor and transmit from anywhere in your home or office. There really are 101 projects in this book, great pictures, clear diagrams and instructions. The authors also give lots of great tips, background information on all of the technologies and parts used. Best of all, it won't cost you tons of money to build these projects yourself. That's the best part. They list dozens of sources in North America and the UK on their web site where you can find all of the parts you need to make your own gadgets. And you're not expected to be a guru in any of the technologies used throughout the book. I just learned some interesting stuff about how and where my computer stores data that I thought was deleted and about keystroke loggers. There's alot of variety in this book something for everyone. I recommend it very highly to anyone. I think this is the best book in the Evil Genius series.
