![]() Rating: - The First Bad Study Guide In the All-In-One SeriesFirst of all, it has to be said that I've been a huge fan of the All-In-One series of study guides ever since I bought the Comptia A+ study guide from the series. I used the Lotus Notes & Domino R5 All-In-One guide to pass my PCLP exams without any problems whatsoever. But I must also admit that, out of all the study guide purchases that I have made so far, THIS purchase was the most profoundly disappointing of them all. The good news: Practically all the information that you will ever need to know to pass the core MCSA exams are in this book. Hence the TWO stars instead of ONE. The bad news: Practically all the information that you will ever need to know to pass the core MCSA exams are in this book, PROVIDED YOU CAN FIND THE INFORMATION TO BEGIN WITH. Granted, many of the objectives of the three exams do overlap, but the layout of the book is so frustrating that you almost want to scream. A brief explanation of the layout. To begin with, you have the index; standard stuff and applicable to almost every book ever written. Then you have the study info; fair enough so far. But then, at the end of the book, you have a kind of reference grid which tells you which chapter contains which information for which exam. In other words, if you want to study for the W2K Server exam, you have to refer to the reference grid at the BACK of the book to tell you which chapter to go to. You then go to the index at the FRONT of the book and read through the list of topics in the chapter to find the page number of the sought-after information. You then go to the page number quoted to finally get to the info. Unfortunately, half the time, the info presented on the quoted page is either too brief, a lab project, or not there at all. Because of this, I gave up soon after I started using the book. It is understandable that some type of compromise would be needed in order to even have a chance of writing this book. If it had been written with the same format as the Lotus Notes & Domino R5 All-In-One study guide, the book would have been huge. Keep THAT size of book in your rucksack, and you'll be looking for a good chiropracter after a few weeks. But it's not as if the authors / editors / etc. of this study guide didn't KNOW this to begin with. And if they were having problems with the layout of the book, they should have tried something else. And if this layout was the best that they could come up with, then they should have given up and produced a single book for each topic / exam. In short, you can do better for your money. You'll probably have to spend more to buy three seperate books, but at least you won't waste half your precious time bouncing back & forth from reference grid to index to page, like I had to do in THIS book. Like I said, profoundly disappointing.............
