![]() Rating: - Almost PerfectThis book is excellent apart from one small detail. The strategy for a partner who refuses to communicate. It mentions that this maybe the case but then continues as if you have your partner's ear. Unforunately in my case that is not how it is. However, as for defining your own place in the relationship, providing you are able to put in the work, suffer the pain and be completely honest with yourself it works. I have discovered things about my make up that had remained hidden all my life, I'm 54 now. Has it made me think more about myself and my actions?.... You bet and I'm not so bad after all Rating: - AMAZING BOOKAmazing book, i can't believe the difference it made to my life. The book is easy to read and understand, i would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to make changes in their life. Dr Phil has a no nonsense approach and comes across as a mentor rather than a 'pushy' doctor as some authors of books like these can appear to be. The steps are clear and there is no rush to complete the sections, you can complete it in your own time. I found this book informative and easy to absorb, i enjoyed the process of working through each step and i especially loved the 'life lessons'. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Rating: - Great Self-Assessment Exercises and Planning InstructionsI must admit that I like to use self-assessment tools to find out what I am taking for granted, and ignoring. Complacency is a terrible foe! I found the exercises in this book to be the best that I have ever used. If you have read a lot of self-help books, you can skip right through to the exercises. If you haven't read many personal self-help books, be sure to read his ideas first before doing the exercises. Basically, Dr. McGraw is pointing out that we become victims when we stop making conscious choices. He helps us surface those areas where we are operating on automatic pilot, and helps us to take the controls again, consciously. I think that this book is one that everyone would benefit from, who wants to improve their own situation. If you feel particularly weighted down by failure in your own eyes, I also suggest you read Failing Forward. My review of that book will tell you how to find self-assessment exercises for that book, as well. If you want to improve how other people perform, however, that is beyond the scope of this book. You'll have to look elsewhere. If you have read nothing on the subject, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and The One Minute Manager will be good starting points. I found Dr. McGraw's beliefs to match my own very closely, which is why I liked the book so much -- even the parts that paralleled things I knew already. If you skip the exercises, though, you will have made a serious error. That's probably 98% of the benefit of this book. I first read the book four years ago, and keep the results of the exercises in a place where I can review them daily to help me stay focused on the changes I need to make. If you like this book, be sure to also read, use and think about the questions in The Life Strategies Workbook. Rating: - A Must-Read!Phillip C. McGraw, Ph.D., better known to Oprah Winfrey fans as Dr. Phil, has popped out a refreshingly in-your-face contribution to the self-help genre that doesn't beat around the bush. You will not be asked to commune with your inner child or vent your anger and pain. Instead, Life Strategies is a prescription for action, complete with stories, including about Oprah. Each chapter contains at least one writing assignment, designed to stimulate honest inquiry and to challenge even your most basic assumptions. These culminate in a meticulously detailed set of instructions for creating your life strategy. Organized self-starters will love the lists and matrices, but even readers who don't plunge into the assignments will gain fresh insights into their behavior. We from getAbstract prescribe this bouncy book to anyone seeking a step-by-step plan for self-assessment and realistic life change. Cynics need not apply. Rating: - a "me too" bookI add this review to warn the reader about buying a book which only became successful because of the author's appearance on US television (more than for its intellectual merits). The Americans are buying this book massively, probably to add it to other books they never read. That word of caution given, I adhere the principles that are hidden behind the 10 life laws, the 18 assignments and the seven-step strategy that Philip McGraw gives us. That's why I hesitated to give this book "4 stars". I also agree with the author that one will have to do one's homework (try out the material) if one wants to get most out of it. As the author writes, such a book is not meant to be passive reading. Unfortunately, the way these principles are packaged didn't help me to do something constructive with them. The writing style and the examples activated a skeptic attitude in me. As the author acknowledges on page 25, there is a serious risk that you'll start challenging every word he writes. So what exactly is my critique? First, if you're not an Oprah fan, the first 10 pages of this book will put you off reading the rest. Secondly, the author gives the impression he has invented the wheel (yes, one still can invent the wheel, a Canadian even showed that one can PATENT the wheel in 2001!). Of course, as the author writes, he collected the principles to learn from elsewhere. Unfortunately, often the original versions are more precise than what you'll find here. Yet, it is difficult to check that, given there is no reference section in the book, and only a few of the sources get cited. (Hint: look at books based on NLP). To me, this book mostly proves that being on Oprah's show will help your book to "make it". In fact, I wonder who would have known about this book if the author wouldn't have been connected with Oprah (if you didn't know that, the author will spend at least 5% of the book explaining you that). My conclusion? If you buy this book, I hope you will walk away with the principles. Given my critique, I have no clue how big your chances are. If you are living in the U.S., *VERY* found of Oprah, and willing to do the assignments the author gives you, this book may fit you. Otherwise, better look elsewhere. Patrick E.C. Merlevede...
