![]() Rating: - the author sees his problem - but fails to correct itThis book has its moments. The setup is enticing, the characters are real and throw themselves into their roles - and actually seem to be turned on by what's going on. But somehow you come out feeling disappointed. I think Pascal himself summed it up best with this line - "I could have coped with being on display as a handsome prisoner, valued for my looks, but this denigrated me, leaving me shameful and filthy." This sentiment is echoed throughout the book, and I, too, looked for the handsome prisoner, the noble suffering, the resolve to stand proud against the pain. I caught glimpses - mostly Pascal mourning the fact his masters seem unable to give it to him - but on the most part I felt that an entire, important dimension had been lost from the book. Without it, the action seems a trifle pointless at times. How the author can take sexually charged situations, then fail to take full advantage of them - while simultaneously acknowledging his failure through Pascal's disappointment - is beyond me.
