![]() Rating: - Exuberate, literary styleIn some ways, this is my favourite version. I prefer this to the revised version of this, the Revised English Bible (REB). The New English Bible moves away from the tradition of preference for more literal renderings (such as the New International Version), so it feels contemporary although it is some 30 years old I think. But it doesn't try to keep the language 'simple' in the way that the Good News Bible or the Contemporary English Version does - this is not a version of second-language speakers of English. Here is Genesis 1.1-2 as a sample: In the beginning of creation, when God made haven and earth, the earth was without form and void, with darkness over the face of the abyss, and a mighty wind that swept over the surface of the waters. Rating: - Abysmal bindingThere are few pocket editions of the RSV currently available (July 2003) so it is good to find two here at Amazon. The RSV (and the NRSV) need no comment from me as regards the text. They are the best available translations in English (for all but the right wing of some denominations). But oh dear me. The quality of this volume is abominable - all due to the binding. It could not have been done any cheaper! In fact after just 2 months of use the spine has cracked in 2 places: Proverbs 16 and Matthew 3. If this is the quality which Collins Bible (A Division of HarperCollins Publishers for THE BIBLE SOCIETIES - according to the front page) produces then it might be better to purchase a larger version from Oxford where you get quality at every price level. If you must purchase this one, heat it up in the microwave to soften the glue on the spine before you try opening it. The 2 star rating is for the binding and NOT for the contents of this volume. Rating: - Brilliant Value, Beautiful ReadingGrowing up in the mid-to-late 1980s in the UK, the standard Bible used in my secondary education was the New English Bible. I have not been a Christian for most of my life, and only recently felt a desire to actually own a Bible of my own which I could read and consider for myself, and consder on its own merits, and as a reference book in its own right. I looked at Amazon - and was pleased to find a New English Bible available - a translation which I felt instant affinity to due to having seen so many copies during my youth. The Oxford edition is far superior to those which were used in my school days. The cover is green mock leather, with gilt engraving, and is quite beautiful - and amazing in a book at this kind of price. The line illustrations throughout the book are very imagination-stimulating, and really give a spirit of the times to your reading of the book. I am about half way through Genesis now, and am finding this Bible to be a real eye-opener and a real page-turner - a great work of fiction - if viewed from that perspective - which captures the imagination. Also, intruiging as an historical text, and possibly more. The language is easy to read (although I understand that the King James edition is arguably the most reliable and least likely to contain major translation errors). The New English Bible, however, is an excellent 'reading' Bible - the language of which flows easily, without being too American and thus feeling uncomfortable or 'unnatural' to English English readers. I was amazed (as someone who is only now really reading them for the first time) by how short the Gospels seem to be, but how interesting - and sensible - Christ's message seems to be!! I was so intruiged by this translation of The Bible, that I have ordered Asimov's Guide to the Bible to supplement my reading. All in all, a recommeded book for believer and unbeliever alike, easy to read, with beautiful illustrations, a cultural classic of the World. And excellent value at this or any price. Rating: - Well Chosen WordsThe New English Bible is a rare find in the US, and a choice one. The words flow with a cadence just unfamiliar enough to cause a person to pay a bit more attention to the beautiful English of this version. Some images receive a new life with scholarly substitutions for the expected translation. This is not my study Bible, nor even my prayer Bible, but it is the one I read for a fresh perspective.
