![]() Rating: - As American as Apple PieThis book was the first of two sequels to the novel "M*A*S*H" by Dr. Richard Hornberger, a general practitioner from eponymous state of Maine. The character of "Hawkeye" Pierce is always supposed to have been partially based upon Hornberger himself, and judging by this story the author must have been a very interesting man. The novel follows the main protaganist of the original story, Hawkeye, one year after leaving Korea. He's just lost his job with the Veterans' Administration and is in need of work. "Trapper" John sets him up with a much-sought residency in New York which leaves Hawkeye in a position to provide for his family. Eventually he is able to set up a practice in Spruce Harbor, Maine and attracts the old "Swampmen" up to work with him and the interesting band of characters who inhabit the locale. Stylistically the novel is excellent. It reads just like "M*A*S*H" the novel almost reads like a series of short stories. It was written in the 1970s but is set in the 1950s. It is every bit as funny as the original novel and in this writer's opinion the inclusion of domestic situations and the wider cast of characters results in a warm, humorous book which is well worth the read.
