![]() Rating: - The absurd wonder of Victorian IngenuityThis book showcases a vast array of delightful Victorian inventions, many of which never made it past the Patent Applied for stage because they were too fanciful to work, or just too downright weird to catch on. You see all the original presentations - in all their engraved line-drawing wonder, along with the advertising blurbs from the inventors. Many are adverts for failed products, and many give a delightful insight into why the Victorian world was such a fun place to be - no idea was too wacky to try, even if it could never have worked! Nobody today would mock the idea of moving walkways (see most airports...) but the idea of moveable type set into the tyres of bikes to print advertising messages on the muddy road surfaces of the 1880s seem less obvious. And who in their right minds would buy spiked "anti-stangulation collars" to ward of street thugs? And what about electric belts and corsets to promote health? On the more sinister side, the book shows early attempts to overcome resistance to cremation and the electric chair. But most of the other items are more amusing than anything else, and your only worry would be just how safe they would be to use in daily life. This is a book which I used to borrow from my local public library regularly for the great entertainment value it provides, and it's a worthwhile addition to any Victoriana collectors' shelf. From the sublime to the ridiculous, this book proves that there's nobody as confident but yet still crazy as the inventor who believes that anything is possible! And this book is a catalogue of the most improbably possibilities you'll ever see (probably!) Try searching the Internet for "Victorian Inventions" or Ebay for "Victorian Inventions".
