![]() Rating: - A magical StoryThis is a wonderful book and I hope adults won't be put off giving this book to their children because of the storyline. I think adults sometimes do not give children enough credit, it is the one book from my childhood which really stands out in mind, and I had it from a very early age about six. Young children propably won't really process the more so called "violent" parts of the book and instead will be captivated by the illustrations, it is the kind of book that as you get older you appreciate more. I found the story itself and especially the illustrations fascinating and it really stimutaled my imagination (especially the inside cover with all the fairy tale characters set against the Beanstalk), when mentioned it is the one ladybird book which all of my friends remembed (we are in our mid twenties!), as their favourate of all the ladybird books and they all complained about the new cartoon style illustrations which don't capture the imagination in the same way. For children who love to read this is something special as it is everything a realy fairy tale should be. Rating: - A beautiful story, and a beautiful lesson in lifeThe little mermaid always was and always will be the greatest story ever told. first of all to those who were fans of the Disney movie, this fairy tale is not quite the same, and the character is somewhat different from Ariel. the story is about a young mermaid princess who has the most beautiful voice in creation and always had a fascination with all that exists above the waves. on each of the princess'es 15th birthdays they are allowed to rise to the surface to discover the world above, henceforth the little mermaid yearns for the day that she too will get to partake of this privelidge. when the time does come she surfaces in the evening and sees a princes ship and decides to ride the waves alongside it. but disaster stikes in the form of a storm and she rescues the prince, who is not much older than she, and she begins to fall in love with him. after this she pines for him day and night, until it becomes so unbearable that she seeks help from the sea-witch, who takes her tongue so she cannot sing or speak to the prince in exchange for the princess to become human. it is then that the little mermaid is given the task to make the prince love her back in the way she loves him by simply being herself, and if his love is strong enough she will need no power of speech to seduce him. however if she fails she will become sea foam and die without gaining a human soul and she will never see heaven. after many trials and heartaches the prince chooses someone else and the little mermaid dies on the waves. yet there is some hope for her at the end of the story, leading to that classic, heartbreaking ending that shows us all that love is much deeper than any of the oceans. this is one of the best editions available as it is well illustrated, and the pictures are true works of art, not just some silly cartoon-like doodles. Please buy this book, it's morale is one of the most valuable you could ever learn, and is such a lesson in both life and human nature.
