![]() Rating: - Not what it's cracked up to be.I bought this book on the basis of several reviews and have been, I'm sorry to say, sorely disappointed. It may well have worked very well as part of the support regime of the author's university lecture but as a stand alone learning tool, I feel it fails badly. If you wish to be given programs to input and run then yes the book's fine. If you wish to fully understand the instruction set and implementation within PICs then it doesn't work. There is a list of the PIC instruction set in the back of the book but it sorely lacks a cohesive way of explaining their functions. And be warned that the links to the Manchester Metropolitan University website no long work. And no body that location has the common decency to even reply to e-mails asking if they can help track Mr Smith's pages down. All in all I'd have to say that this is not a book for the beginner and I don't even classify myself as that since I have spent many, many years working in machine code on a wide range of microprocessors. Rating: - second edition please...about the third PIC book i bought, and definately the best! this book manages to cover more ground than many books twice the thickness (naming no names...)Some very clear explanations, and an easy introduction for beginners which encourages experimentation with assembly language (scary for newbies!)no fancy PC/hardware setup is required even one of the 'six bits and a socket' programmers will suffice,my original setup cost around £2.The book (as does any technology title)shows it's age, though it was upto date when published it could do with a refresh to cover later PIC's; this said it is a WHOLE lot more upto-date than the two other british paperbacks. If i had to choose which book to recommend to someone keen to learn about PIC micro's ON ANY BUDGET it would be this title. Rating: - ExcellentThe author of this book is one of my lecturers at Manchester Metropolitan university and I can honestly say that the book is excellent at communicating the knowledge required in programming PIC microchips it is also an extremely useful reference book and offers plenty of examples with clear descriptions of how the codes function and how they can be implemented into projects the book was essential in me passing the electronics unit of my second unit at uni. Rating: - a very good place to startHaving previously attempted Myke Predko's book, this book was a revelation. VERY easy to follow and pick up concepts from. I also have John Morton's book which probably has slightly better depth, but PIC in Practice scores highly in using mostly the 16F84 flash programmable chip making it quick to write over errors or to make small alterations in examples to examine the effects.
