Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Superb book for any Tomato fan
The book is beautifully produced, written and illustrated. It is also very informative. As a budding tomato grower who lives thousands of miles from the US, I doubt if any of the heirloom varieties suit my local climate nevetheless the book is a joy to read.

My only (and quite unrealistic) wish is that somehow Carolyn Male should have managed to include all the 1200 plus varieties that she has so far grown!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fantastic book on a fascinating subject
Dr. Male has written a beautiful and extremely helpful guide to wonderful heirloom tomatoes. I like to try different tomato varieties every year, and this book will be my guide to what to grow next year. I must add that I am mystified by the comments of Ms Emily White, who accuses growers of heirloom tomatoes of being snobs and fanatics. We just like good tomatoes. Heirlooms were handed down through the generations by family farmers, not snobs. I know quite a few people who grow heirloom vegetables, and they grow them for the taste, not some elitist attitude or for specialty markets. All my heirloom tomatoes end up on my surburban dinner table. I seriously question whether Ms White has ever grown anything. If she does grow tomatoes, I suggest that she try some heirloom varieties before criticizing those who grow them. If you love garden fresh tomatoes, buy this book!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A MUST READ for any gardener
I thank Dr. Male for writing such an informative book about the old fashioned heirloom tomato.

I own and operate a greenhouse. I also sell hundreds of different varieties of tomato plants. My customers in this midwest farm country prefer heirloom tomatoes. Why? Because they just taste better.

Now, thanks to Dr. Male, my customers and folks just like them, have the opportunity to see realistic photographs, read descriptions, and compare the different tomato varieties.

All one need do, is taste the difference between the little red rock that one buys in a grocery store sold as a tomato, and compare it to the marvelous full flavor of a home grown heirloom tomato to be convinced that there really IS a difference.

This is a beautiful, and useful book.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Indispensable for the Heirloom Gardener!
Dr. Male has provided a comprehensive guide to growing tomatoes which answers most any question a grower could have. As if that weren't enough, the beatifully photographed field guide is a must have for anyone delving into growing heirloom tomatoes. It is worth it's weight in platinum! This book is not (nor are heirlooms) for snobs It is for anyone who is tired of eating, or growing the bland, tasteless hybrids that have been developed for the commercial grower. They are developed for traits like shipping without bruising and shapes that pack well....the way they taste has little to do with it. These heirlooms are the tomatoes that you remember your grandmother growing. The ones that taste like summer.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - ...beautifully photographed; wonderful histories
Anyone who is tired of settling for the tasteless globes which pass for tomatoes in most supermarkets will love this book. Look at the beautiful photographs and read about the fascinating histories of the fruits which hail from all areas of the world. Heirloom tomatoes are not grown only by "snobs" or fanatics. I was introduced to them by the author, Carolyn Male, by way of the the gardening folders on America Online. Fellow heirloom lovers exchange seeds of different varieties, either in person or through the mail and there are also abundant catalogs for acquiring the seeds. So if you are a person who is ready to try something a little out of the mundane, this book is for you.
