![]() Rating: - An influential and enjoyable superhero 'war in space' epic.First published in the early 1970s, the Kree-Skrull war remains the most entertaining fusion of the space opera and super-hero genres yet published. At the time it first appeared on the newstands, writer Thomas and artist Adams were consciously extending what super-hero comics could do; their story of how a team of super-heroes from Earth, including Marvel comic mainstays such as Captain America and the mighty Thor, become embroiled in an intergalactic war was both more complex and more lengthy than any Marvel comic-book story yet printed. Historical precedent to one side, the saga remains a vastly entertaining read. Adams' artwork here, expertly embellished by inker Palmer, is still the high-watermark of realism in the superhero comicbook, with the pages detailing the adventures of the Ant-Man in the body of the android Avenger The Vision particularly enthralling, and nobody could ever make the surreal idea of dangerous alien shape-shifters trapped in the form of cows more believable than Adams. The script by Thomas has perhaps aged less well than the art, with his trademark interest in indulgently tying together obscure strands of comic-book history to the fore, but for all its bluster and sentimentality, it is still a pacy and well-structured read. The shame is that deadline troubles meant that Adams didn't illustrate the final chapter of the epic, and the conclusion of the story is consequently less satisfying than the preceeding chapters. Yet that really is quibbling, because what is printed here still stands as a thrilling, 'widescreen' intergalactic superhero war story, and the influence of these stories can be clearly seen even today, as the War In Space storyline running through DC comicbooks in the Summer of 2001 will testify.
