![]() Rating: - the reference standardClassic textbook that will be of interest not just to undergraduates and researchers, but also to anyone curious about molecular biology or how a cell works. It simultaneously provides detailed information as well as a comprehensive overview of the field. The latter point is not easily accomplished because there is a huge number of new papers published in molecular and cellular biology each year. These guys manage to keep the bird's eye view in mind while covering such topics as cellular evolution, molecular genetics, internal organization of the cell, cell-cell interactions, the immune system, and cancer. Every student in the biological sciences should read this book from cover to cover. Author of Adjust Your Brain: A Practical Theory for Maximizing Mental Health. Rating: - EssentialThis book is a staple for all undergraduate and postgrad bioscience students. It contents a broad, yet detailed introduction to every aspect of cell biology and I still refer back to it during my PhD. Its one of those books that doesn't really contain any information that you couldn't find on the internet, but manages to summarise a whole load of information and presents it fully and clearly - saving you lots of time and ensuring you don't forget anything. Absolutely essential. Buy it. Rating: - incredibly helpful groundworkMBoC provides a really valuable grounding in the whole array of topics that might be considered under its title. Perfect for undergrad studies the early chapters really are idiot proof and cover a lot of the fundemental biochemistry - later chapters provide a really good grounding in more advanced and specific topics such as development, cancer and immunology. There are also excellent technical topics that explain the theory and uses of a range of techniques probably not familiar to the undergrad but often refered to in primary literature. I used this book throughout my undergrad years and still refer to it now during my PhD. I found it was of most use in providing a background and structure on which to build your reading of the primary literature - the huge margins someone was objecting to are perfect for jotting down references and notes. Secondly it is a perfect reference when reading literature that assumes familiarity with a topic outside of your normal research area - or that has become a bit rusty! Rating: - 4th year PhD and still referring to this bookI made a lot of use of the previous (3rd) edition during my undergraduate years. Now I'm near to completing a PhD and I'm using the 4th edition to catch up on thing my degree didn't cover that I now need to know. An excellent introduction to cell biology. Rating: - very interestingAlthough using this book for studies at university, I actually found it very interesting, and read a lot of it without actually needing it for my course! highly recomended.
