 Rating:  - Interesting idea, but scary hair.Quite an interesting, if rather US-centric, rehash of raised bed gardening. Psychological effect of 'chunking' work to be done is probably very effective at making gardening less intimidating. Have to say, though, that the photos of Mel suggest he has just about the scariest comb-over I've seen in years. Someone needs to tell him that it's not fooling anyone. Rating:  - Vermiculite problemsI found this book very interesting and helpful, and have constructed raised beds 28" high and 4foot square for my vegetable growing. These are very helpful as I suffer from arthritis and find it difficult to bend. The only problem I found was with the vermiculite. Horticultural grade is very fine, and suitable for covering seeds etc, but I could not find 'agricultural' grade anywhere. I did finally find what was required - but it is 'INSULATION' grade, and is also used for making lightweight concrete. This may help those who wish to use the mix as specified. Since obtaining the correct mix I find that it keeps the 'soil' warm, damp but well drained and works well. Rating: - Good if a little hard to read!This is an excellet book in terms of its practicle advice on gardening, and I fully intend to use its principles. I did however find it read a lot like an american self help book for the first few chapters which you had to get through before you got to the actual how to do it part. Still recommend it highly. Rating: - It really works!I bought this book over Christmas and have put some of the principles into practice both at home, small country garden, and at our allotment. The book is full of practical tips, but the method is one that should be adopted by many gardeners: psychologically, dividing your garden into 4 ft squares makes it far more manageable..especially when weeding! We have made our paths with thick layers of newspaper covered with woodchips.. this works very well.. and used wooden frames. Because you put all the fertility just into the frames, you can really build fertile soil. Our harvest so far (I'm writing at the end of May) has been fantastic for such a small space. I particularly like Mel's idea for training cucurbits and even New zealand spinach vertically. A terrific book, that's an enjoyable read as well as being practical. There are so many books on gardening which give you the impression that the authors have not actually done what they suggest; but this book is full of ideas that really work! You won't regret buying it!
