Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Good for the beginner but of little use to the serious cyclist
Some of the reviews already written here cover this book in more detail than I will.

Suffice to say that this is not be best piece of writing I have ever read. Quite frankly, it is apalling, switching between the first and third person and routinely repeating points that have already been made. With proper editing this book could have been substantially shorter, altough as it is, I read it in a single day (had a lot of waiting!). The plan itself will baffle anyone with more than a simple, rudimentary knowledge of physical training. Each week pretty much repeats itself with the exception of the fact that each session increases in intensity at the Beginner and Intermediate levels. The advanced level is supposed to be only if you can go sub-8:00 for a 3 mile time trial, though the sessions themselves would not be beyond the average commuter who put their minds to it.

That said, if you are a complete novice, new to cycling AND new to the idea of following a structured training plan, then this is a very good start simply because it is straightforward to understand.

If on the otherhand you know that the road gets slippery when wet (seriously, they point this out more than once in this book) or that you have to wear more clothes when it gets cold (Yep, they feel the need to tell you that too) and you have a reasonable interest in developing your knowledge of physical training and specifically how to put together a proper plan for cycling, then I'd look elsewhere such as SERIOUS CYCLING (which I've only leafed through but looks far better) or even SERIOUS TRAINING FOR ENDURANCE ATHLETES (which is not cycling specific but is VERY detailed and applicable to cycling).

If you are going to buy it though, get it as cheaply as you can because once you've read it you'll likely throw it away - I do not foresee this book being one you will refer to over and over again, if indeed at all after you've read it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great programs
This is a cycling specific book written by Lance's trainer rather than the big guy himself.

As a book it generally receives mixed views but then Lance generally seems to get a mixed reception from the 'proper' racing crowd.

Personally I have found it to be an excellent manual, with advice on food, training and riding skills. Maybe there is a lot of basic stuff thrown in that patronises the riders who are already pretty competent but at my level I found it thrilling and a real eye-opener.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A good book; quite motivational
I like this book. I am a 2 - 3 day a week club rider and often read this book. Okay, if you are hoping that this book will give you the key to your winning the Tour de France next year then you will be disappointed. This is not a hard core training manual. What it IS is a book that details to novice cyclists - such as myself - the issues one has to contend with and address to perform at a high level like Lance does. Not that I or anyone else reading this could hope to emulate the feats accomplished by the professional peleton (unless you happen to be Jan Ullrich of course...)

Do NOT buy this book if you are an advanced cyclist wanting to progress in the sport hoping to read about advanced training principles. However, if you'd like some pointers and advice as a beginner or intermedaite level cyclist then for 8 quid you will not go far wrong. The bit about "Lance in Action" on the 9th stage of the 1999 TdF is very interesting. It puts you in your place if you think you did well on your 40 miler last Saturday...

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good Book For Beginner Cyclists
Don't let the title fool you- No secrets unlocked here but good information on Lance's training. It was a very interesting read after watching Lance to another victory, but I don't like most people I know who train have every day programs to follow. Will help you understand what it takes to climb to the top with simple steps with eating and sleeping like the champ. If you are a fan you love it other wise basic training for an die hard cyclists. Also recommend The Backsmart Fitness Plan- a very wicked chapter on stretches that helped me out a lot on those tight hamstrings and lower back muscles.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - not to shabby
i got this book for christmas and although it has some "basic" suggestions in it, i feel that it isnt all that bad. it leads you thorough all of the lance proven 7 week success plan and all the strength work and eating habits that a good cyclist needs. There are many basic things in this book such as telling you what steel is! but overall i feel this book is quite good for the improving cyclist
