 Rating: - Bloody superbIf you only buy one book on the house-buying-in-Italy process, make sureit is this one. I bought this one and the one by the Sunday Times (Larner& Howell) and Mr Neale's is by far & away the superior. It has excellentsections on the various regions in Italy (to help you choose your house)plus info on Italian taxes, fees, contracts and conveyancing proceduresAND an extremely helpful English translation of the standard preliminarysale contract (compresso), plus detailed notations, so that you can makesure your compresso contains all the right clauses etc before you sign it. In my opinion, that is the best thing in the book. Very helpful sectionson DIY & building tools and methods too, including pictures of trowels etcwith the Italian words beside them (how cool is that?!). Also sectionsabout gas supplies, electricity & other useful stuff you need to knowafter you have bought your house (or, in my case, ruin). A truly fabulous,independent, godsend of a book by a very knowledgeable man indeed. Icannot recommend it highly enough. His detailed knowledge of the intricacies of house buying law in Italy is infinite and we would have fewer grey hairs if this book was available then. Apart from that it is a wonderful guide from a very sympathetic student of the history, language and humanity of the Italian nation. In concise chapters he will give you the benefit of his long study and experience of the regions, their differences and special charms. The stuff this man has learned would take the casual visitor more than a lifetime to obtain. Here is his knowledge for you to savour at the price of a paperback. This is not just a book for aspiring housebuyers, it is an invaluable asset to anyone travelling in Italy. Rating: - a very interesting and informative readI have been very interested in buying property in Italy for about the past two years. I bought this book about 6 weeks ago and have not been able to put it down! It contains absolutely everything I need to know before I can actually go and buy the property I am looking for. The book gives a brief history of Italy and then goes into greater detail about the history of each area of Italy and what each area has to offer for the perspective purchaser. I particularly liked the way the book explains the procedure one must follow if making a purchase. This area of the book has been most helpful and I would highly reccommend it if anyone else is looking to buy property in Italy. I assure you that you will finish the book having no unanswered questions. This book must have been written by someone who has had several dealings in the buying and selling of property in Italy! Rating: - The best such guide availableLet me confess at once. I am a compulsive buyer of books about Italy, both old and new. I know the literature on the subject. I also own an Italian home. And I can assure other readers that this book is by far the best practical guide to buying a property in Italy that I have read. It goes much deeper into the history and regions of the country than any comparable guide. It is comprehensive and well written. The nitty-gritty is up to date. The book is worth buying for its excellent translation of the standard Italian compromesso (property sale contract) alone. Gordon Neale is obviously an Italophile with classical learning and deep knowledge of Italian culture and of the Italian property scene. His is a "warts and all" picture. He sets the context and explains the procedures. He deals pithily with such topics as crime, the mafia, politics, the education system and health care. The book is a good read in its own right as a definition of Italy and its diverse regions, which even Italians would find illuminating. Eating and drinking get a good mention, region by region, which is understandably an Italian cultural priority too. For the practicalities of buying a property, this book gives sound advice in a very accessible form. Furthermore you get insights into the geography, language and mentality of the people that you will not find in standard tourist guides. The expert section on gardening itself, clearly the fruit of long experience, is a bonus even for those who have already made the move to Italy. No doubt the next edition will have tidied up the minor editing mistakes and inconsistencies that prompt the only criticism I can make of this otherwise elegant guide. It deserves to become the classic of its kind. Rating: - Bravo!It is a delight to read a reference book that is such a good read and has information which is both useful and wonderfully entertaining. The historical notes and observations on the various regions make this book into a 'must have' gem. One should not even holiday in Italy without it.
