![]() Rating: - We've just been converted. We have just had our loft converted. We knew a good carpenter and he recommended a plasterer and an electrician. Not knowing anything at all about building works and wanting to be involved as much as possible we bought this book to help. I am pleased to say the conversion is a great success and we were able to follow the planning and progress easily and in detail with the use of this book. All the relevent stages of construction were covered from plans through to completion and it was not too technical, which suited us perfectly. Rating: - Back to basicsIf your thinking of doing a DIY loft conversion then you`ll need to look further a field. This read is back to basics, what is a joist, what is a roof. It has very little useful information. Lets face it if your going to attempt a loft conversion, you`d know what a joist is! I was expecting guides on altering purlins etc...this just disappoints. Rating: - You get what you pay forI read all the reviews, both negative and positive on the site and because of the cost I bought it. It gives a general outline of the principles of loft converting but I still need more answers so will be looking at other books. The illustrations are adequate for the cost of the book but for a cover that has been quckly thrown together without creativity it says a lot about the editor who gives a credit to the cover's designer. I will be selling mine back to amazon when finished not wanting as a momento or for reference. Rating: - Reasonable overview, disappointing illustrationsI am planning a loft conversion and trying to decide how much can be done "DIY" and how much requires professional intervention. I found the book useful in providing an overview of the entire loft conversion process and I now feel as though I have a reasonable idea of the different steps involved. I feel it is let down mainly by the quality of its illustrations and diagrams, which comprise a good percentage of the book. Some are inaccurate and many others appear to be included as "padding" - the book would be considerably thinner and no less useful without them. I read the other reviews (some negative, some positive) before buying this book and decided that because it was inexpensive it was probably worth the risk. I am as yet undecided as to whether or not this was a wise decision! Rating: - No help to the DIYerThis book may help you if you plan to have your conversion professionally installed. If you want to have a go yourself then it is of little (if any) value.... VERY DISAPOINTING !
