![]() Rating: - This is a MUST READ - not just for footie fansThis book is quite simply brilliant in my view. I expected a sort of litany of the progress of the Reds, but it was so much more than that. It is categorised by sellers as a "Football, Liverpool" book, when really it's at least as much about what it was to grow up in Liverpool in the post-WW2 years, so it deserves a wider readership than just footie fans. The descriptions of events, football and non-football, happy and tragic, are vividly told, and in particular exposition on Hillsborough was masterly and very very moving. I strongly urge you to read this book - you won't regret it. Rating: - The Anfield of human conflictThis is a stunning piece of modern social history and one of the best books I've read on any subject. It's well-written straight from the heart and often very funny. There are chilling moments too, such as the author's account of the Heysel stadium disaster in 1985. The book deserves a wider audience and should appeal to football fans and non-fans alike. Excellent stuff. Rating: - Twists, turns... and not just on the football pitchThere is so much more to this book than football: funny anecdotes and quotes, travel to far-flung places and music. Not a football fan, this was a true surprise - non-stop entertainment bound in a book that makes you laugh and cry. An emotional rollercoaster that's awakened an interest in Liverpool - and a visit to Anfield on my next visit to the UK! Rating: - A gem of social historyThis isn't just a sports book, it's real social history charting one man's journey through 50 years of following Liverpool FC through the changing character of the city. A gem for researchers and an excellent read whether you are interested in sport or not.
