Packing a mammoth 650Mb of data onto a slim disc that weighs next to nothing, they have made it simple for us to load our favourite albums, games and computer programs quickly onto our PCs. Brilliant, but not brilliant enough. As more and more of us take our computing on the move, the transporting of even a handful of CDs can become irksome. Add the fact that a spinning CD is a drain on the precious battery life of your laptop, then the hassle of ejecting and reinserting CDs on trains and aeroplanes, and an even more compact medium starts to look appealing. Enter the third version of Microtest's Virtual CD software. It throws the CDs away altogether, extracting the information from the discs, and then compressing it on your hard disk by up to 95 per cent. Once Virtual CD has created its version of your CD, be it a copy of Microsoft Office or the new Radiohead album, an icon pops up in the program's browser on your computer desktop, just like any program icon in fact. And just like a program icon, you click... and the virtual CD runs like the real thing. An obvious bonus for those who spend a lot of time travelling is that they can take their entire music CD collection on the road with them on their laptop, and not fill up their luggage or hard disk in the process. Even on your desktop PC, packages which require the insertion of multiple CDs will be made much less tedious. And the fact that Virtual CD runs six times faster than a standard 32speed CD-ROM drive, should ensure fewer dead-stops during graphics-heavy games, or indeed on any programs you previously ran direct from the CD. --John Rennie Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Not the easiest to useThis product has a quirky interface that makes it difficult to use - it expects the user to be technically proficient. The slim document and help screens don't help, leaving it up to the user to work it out. Existing applications already installed on my PC would not work using the virtual drive, until I tried uninstalling them and then reinstalling them. It would have been nice if the product documentation had said that. So 1 star gone for the poor interface and being difficult to use and another lost for the poor documentation and help. Rating: - Excellent utility. An excellent little utility. Installs without any fuss and does exactly what it claims to do - not much more you can ask really. I find that with my CDs so much more easily available, things like dictionaries, encyclopaedias and so on get much more used and so the Virtual CD helps you get much more use value from them. Highly recommended. Rating: - Convenient and user friendlyThis is a great program for all of those people who have cd's all over the place but never where they should be. You'll need a fairly hefty hard drive if you want to shove a lot of games onto your hard disk becasuse you've got a double whammy situation. First you copy the CD to the hard disk which could take up to 700MB and then you have to install it which could take as much again. Get yourself a 30 gig plus drive and that's not too bad but do bear it in mind. For sheer convenience it's worth the money, no more inserting multiple disks, just click on the icon and off you go. Overall a great piece of software, it's very user friendly, I'd recomend it. Try searching the Internet for "Virtual CD 3" or Ebay for "Virtual CD 3".
