![]() Rating: - Scorpion or Chainsaw ?The Scorpion is a really good general use saw but everyone should remember (including myself) that it is only really for light use. Where a fine cut on wood or metel is needed it is terrific. I have managed to kill 2 Scorpion saws over the last 2 years by too much heavy use. The problem is if you apply the slightest pressure on the blade if strains the blade holding device that after a few more uses will fail. If you want to cut lots of wood where finish is not too important buy a chain saw, is some cases the difference in money is only a few p.ounds. If you want a fine cut on wood or need to cut metal or plasic buy a scorpion. But remember not to push it too hard. Rating: - Okay but not greatI got one of these saws for rough cutting for timber for garden construction (fencing, chicken run etc.) and it does okay. For anything that requires control, like indoor carpentry this isn't the right tool. And for anything heavier like cutting logs for firewood, ditto. So it's range is very limited. Rating: - Beware of scorpions!I bought one of these in 2002. Within 8 months, I was on my second saw, under warranty. The mounting holding the blade in place is very weak, and gradually wears with the result that the blade points upwards instead of level and eventually the mounting breaks. The B & D agent said that they had had several returned with the same problem. I cant have used the saw more than a dozen times in the 5 years that I have had it, and at no time did I saw wood etc more than the thickness recommended. Now, the thing has broken again. Very disappointing for something bearing the B & D name, especially as I paid £69 for it, not £39!! So, unless they've changed the mounting, I wouldn't consider another one. Rating: - Learn From My MistakeBlack and Decker Scorpion Saw. I'm now two years into a complete restoration of my house and I invested in one of these saws at the start of proceedings. To be frank, I used it three times, discovered it was pointless, and have not used it since! Other tools do the same job a great deal better. The flaws are these: The blade is rather too short and not particularly effective, and the motor is underpowered. Everything I tackled with it took a long, long time to cut through. You'd think it would zip right through materials but oh no! And the geometry of the handle means that control is imprecise too - when you do achieve the cut it wont be as straight as it could have been. My personal experience is that a good modern full length hand saw cuts two to three times faster than this gadget! For instance, Jack make some excellent saws with razor sharp teeth that sell for around £7 so you save money too. Look on any building site and that's what the pro's use for speed and accuracy, not a Scorpion saw! That's why your local builders merchant has boxes full of them. Team your hand saw with a reasonable electric circular saw (available at Amazon and at least four times more powerful than the Scorpion!) and you'll have all the kit you need to make easy work of both small section timber and longer cuts in sheet materials. Lastly, if you need to cut out holes within sheet, buy a Jig Saw with a blade guide and preferably a pendulum action. Learn from my mistake and invest your own money more wisely. Rating: - A good buy*** An extremely useful piece of kit and at a good price too. Well recommended. *** Try searching the Internet for "Black & Decker KS890EC Scorpion Saw In Carton" or Ebay for "Black & Decker KS890EC Scorpion Saw In Carton".
