![]() Rating: - A strange haunting filmI watched this film a long time ago on TV and enjoyed it very much. At that time I would have struggled to say why. For many years it was unavailable in any format. It was long on my short list of difficult to attain barely remembered films. A short list including "Night Passage" which I have already reviewed and "Blowing Wild" also starring Gary Cooper and directed by Hugo Fregonese. Still sadly unavailable in any format. I think it is fair to say they are all slightly oddball and that is what I like about "Garden of Evil". The director was Henry Hathaway who could best be decribed as workmanlike rather than gifted. He directed such diverse films as "The lives of a bengal Lancer" (36), "Niagra" (54) and "True Grit" (69) which he is probably best known for. Films that demonstrate his competence and ability to make money for studios which also added up to longevity. "Garden of Evil" has a cast of the highest quality. Cooper plays the role of the taciturn hero as he had done many times. Richard Widmark throws in a good turn as the bad egg. Or is he really so bad. Cameron Mitchell also plays a supporting role long before his "High Chapparral" days. The lovely Susan Hayward supplies the female interset. The film is set during the California gold rush and is the story of three Americans stranded in a Mexican village en route to the gold fields. There a local woman offers them a large sum of money to rescue her husband trapped in a mine out in the Mexican wilderness. The journey is a hazardous one as the Apache Indians are on the rampage. Gold as always brings out the worst in people. Throw this in with the Apache and a feisty woman and there is plenty of action. The film works as a well above average Western for a number of reasons. It is strangely atmospheric in its cinematography and has a good score from Bernard Herrmann. The unusual setting and time period are also a big helping factor. Richard Widmark is at his acid tongued scene stealing best. Coop does what Coop always did best. He looked and played the taciturn Western hero. I would thoroughly recommend this strange and haunting film to you. Whilst not a classic in the mould of "The Searchers" or "Shane" it is well worth watching and a welcome addition to the collection of the Western fan.
