Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: Style trumps substance in Man on Fire, a slick, brooding reunion of Crimson Tide star Denzel Washington and director Tony Scott. The ominous, crime-ridden setting is Mexico City, where a dour, alcoholic warrior with a mysterious Black Ops past (Washington) seeks redemption as the devoted bodyguard of a lovable 9-year-old girl (the precociously gifted Dakota Fanning), then responds with predictable fury when she is kidnapped and presumably killed. Prolific screenwriter Brian Helgeland (Mystic River, L.A. Confidential) sets a solid emotional foundation for Washington's tormented character, and Scott's stylistic excess compensates for a distended plot that's both repellently violent and viscerally absorbing. Among Scott's more distracting techniques is the use of free-roaming, comic-bookish subtitles... even when they're unnecessary! Adapted from a novel by A.J. Quinnell and previously filmed as a 1987 vehicle for Scott Glenn, Man on Fire is roughly on par with Scott's similar 1990 film Revenge, efficiently satisfying Washington's incendiary bloodlust under a heavy blanket of humid, doom-laden atmosphere. --Jeff Shannon Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - decent popcorn rubbishthe acting is solid and the action well staged but the rapid fire visuals soon grate and its 30 minets too long Rating: - Absolutely brilliantIn my opinion this is definitely one of Denzel Washington's best films and shows a real story for the characters involved. Excellent cast of actors too with Micky Rourke and Christopher Walken making a good contribution. The subject is a pretty rough one when considering what is happening in South America at the moment with so many people being kidnapped for large ransoms, especially the background information showing that some aren't fortunate enough to be found in time. A great addition to anyone's dvd collection. Rating: - SuperbI dont need to review this because every other review has already told you how great this film is! Rating: - Disappointing...Had high hopes for this one, but unfortunately, can only rate it an average thriller. An intelligent script. Good performances all round - Denzel's great (as usual), Christopher Walken is excellent (again, as usual), and young Dakota Fanning will have an Oscar by the time she's a teenager. So what went wrong? Well, a few things, but to keep this short, I'll just point the waggly finger at one or two possible reasons. Firstly, the downbeat ending - I know what Director Tony Scott's trying to say here, and bravo, but this just won't sit right with viewers brought up with divine retribution in the styles of Arnie, Sly, and Bruce. Secondly, the 'violence'. Pretty much all implied - very little gets into frame, so don't go expecting some Tarantino bloodbath. More violence at a teletubbies picnic. Last, but not least, the 'heightened reality' editing! It's overused so much here, that by the end of the film you're gonna need a whole box of Panadol Extra! I found myself just wishing for a still frame - just to give my eyes a rest. Think the second half of the movie was filmed entirely on Super8 and spliced together with duct tape and bubblegum by David Blunkett. So, average kidnap thriller spoilt by some of the most irritating camerawork / editing in movie history. Region 1 extras limited to a few trailers and two lacklustre commentaries. Expect R2 will have the same. Rating: - I cannot fault this masterpieceMan on Fire is a masterpiece. It is well written, shot and edited. Lets not ignore the actor's performance's either...Denzel and Dakota make a dynamic team, working off each other and the execution of their characters are remarkable. This is without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best filns I have seen in many years - a definate must-see! Try searching the Internet for "Man On Fire [2004]" or Ebay for "Man On Fire [2004]".
