Editorial Review: Product Description: MicroMemo Digital Voice Recorder for iPod w/video - White - EU Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Turn your iPod into a portable digital sound recorderI'd give this 5 stars if it wasn't for the disappointing perforance of Xtremamacs own microphone. The real selling point of this gadget is that it turns your iPod into a portable digital sound recorder. It has a 3.5mm socket for stereo line-input and 2 selectable sensitivities : 'mic' and 'line'. It makes sound recordings in 'wav' format, making them readily exportable to just about any sound application on PC or Mac. The first thing I did with this gadget was to make a test recording with the supplied mono microphone, using the 'mic' (sensitive) setting. The recording level was disappointingly quiet. Next I tried a Sony powered microphone designed for use with minidisc recorders. This resulted in a very good stereo recording, but I had to use the 'mic' setting (a recording made with the recommended 'line' setting was barely audible). The Xtrememac's built-in speaker is quiet but good quality. In practise its main purpose is to confirm that you have in fact successfully made a recording ! In summary, this item as supplied is fine for recoring voice memos, with the supplied microphone close to the person being recorded. I don't think the microphone supplied would be ideal for recording in a lecture theatre or for recording a conversation between a number of people. However, with a good powered microphone it really comes into its own. There is also the possibility of connecting the line input to another external source such as a mixing desk, tuner output etc. I will be using it to make rough demos of my songs to upload onto Myspace etc. Recordings with a powered mike are almost good enough for CD quality, but may need a little cleaning up to remove a subtle level of hiss that will be detectable to the discerning lestener.
