![]() Rating: - Slow Cooker in Name OnlyI bought this slow cooker from Costco as I liked the idea that I could brown the meat using the slow cooker pot on top of my gas hob then simply lift the pot and place it on the slow cooker container. I left the setting on low thinking this would be ok but unfortunately the contents dried up and burnt. I didn't fill it up to the top so maybe you have to use it at full capacity for it work properly as it simply cooks too fast if only half full. I have a very old slow cooker which is just a ceramic pot placed in a metal heated base and it cooks very slowly, never burns and the food always tastes great but it is not a 4.7ltr cooker, more like a 2.0ltr one! Needless to say I sent it packing back to Costco... Rating: - Excellent purchase, great slow cookerI bought this slow cooker, having looked at the reviews. I liked the look of this one the best, and liked the fact that the cooking pot was so versatile. I did read another review which suggested the pot wasnt large enough, but I find the opposite. The pot can easily feed 4 to 5 people as it says...easily...I've had the machine a week and used it 4 times..My husband objected to chicken with marrow supreme..but I liked it, and he's liked everything else. I've just gone back to work, and was unsure about a loow cooker, as I once tried one years ago, disastrously. This has 3 heat settings, and is great. Today I'm making a lamb curry, and it smells great. The recipe book that came with it, was far too, well I just wouldnt cook any of the recipes. It also came with an instruction book, with 3 extra recipes, one of which I've adapted. At the moment I'm making old favourites. I've bought another recipe book on line, which is also slightly adventureous, but I can adapt these. I defrost the meat in the microwave, brown in the cooking pot, add the rest of the ingredients, and leave...excellent...We've tried not to make soups so far, as the weather is hot, and have managed to make some healthy options with chicken and vegetables. I'm very pleased I bought it, and it hasnt been put away once. Its stylish enough to sit in view. Rating: - The best slow cooker I've ever hadI am quite surprised at some negative comments about this slow cooker, I don't agree with any of them, I've had this for a while, it is my third slow cooker and I must say it is just amazing in every way. I can only recommend it. Rating: - Too fast for slow!Plus points: Great casseroles and soups so far. Have successfully used the pot on the hob and in the oven, as well of course in the slow-cooker base. Minus points: Can't see how food is cooking because lid not glass. No timer for quite an expensive bit of kit. And most of all - it's a fast cooker! Stuff boils merrily away on the low setting which (with watts gadget checker) consumes 180 watts. On high it's 200-210 watts. In future I'll use what it calls 'warm' setting. This, the instructions warn should be only for keeping food warm. But, using 60 watts, this is my idea of slow overnight cooking. Rating: - Doesn't do everything it says on the tin! This was my second slow cooker, purchased because it seemed to do things that other slow cookers don't. It's been returned to the shop where I purcahsed it from because I was disappointed that it didn't do everything it said. The important thing is that this slow cooker cooks food beautifully - it doesn't burn and the food is cooked to perfection. This is the reason I've given 3 stars. The problem is the shape. Firstly, the actual cooking pot is an unusual shape for a slow cooker - looks quite pleasing to the eye, but is shaped rather like a mushroom - in other words, the part you can see at the top is the mushroom "body" and the "stem" is hidden from view. It is this narrowing that is the problem for two reasons. Firstly, it makes removing food difficult if you use a large spoon (which is necessary owing to the type of food that is cooked in such a pot and because the unit is deep). There is also a lip on the top of the pot so if you've managed to scrape food on the spoon up the side to try to remove, it then gets stuck at the top! Secondly, and this is my biggest gripe, and also the thing that swayed me into buying in the first place - because of the small surface area of the bottom of the pot (owing to it being the "stalk" bit(!)) it is fairly useless for using on the hob prior to slow cooing. The product description claims that it is unique because you can simply seal your meat, pre-cook your veg and add stock whilst on the hob and then put it on the base and use as a slow cooker. If you are cooking for more than two people it is very difficult to use this facility. Another point is that you can't see through the lid. The problem with slow cookers in general is that if you lift the lid then you add 10 - 15 minutes cooking time for each "lift". The lid is ceramic so that it can be put in the oven (unlike most other slow cookers that tend to have plastic handles) which is a good thing, but if you think you might be tempted to check how the cooking's going you might be better looking for a model with a glass lid. The cook booklet that comes with this slow cooker is rather on the adventurous side. If you are looking for basic casserole recipes then you will need to purchase an additional cook book. Yes, it cooks beautifully, but if you are cooking for more than two I would advise to look elsewhere.
