Customer Reviews
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Don't lose that trackball!
Fine if it is going to stay on a desk, but BEWARE if it will be used with a laptop or at an armchair! The trackball is not held in place and drops out very easily. So unless you fancy crawling under the sofa every five minutes, look elsewhere for your trackball mouse!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Prefer the Marble Mouse
I use the Logitech Marble Mouse extensively at work, and have done for the last 6 months or so. Thought I'd try the Orbit at home, seeing as it is the LMM's only real rival.

The ball scrolls nicely, the unit sits with satisfyingly firmness on the desk and it certainly looks the part (the little red light under the ball even turns down when you aren't using it, which is a nice touch). It is also comfortable to use rested on your leg, which is my favourite position to minimise wrist/arm strain. The Kensington Mouseworks software is great, allowing you to control all manner of things like cursor acceleration and cursor fine tuning in great detail.

Less positively, the ball just comes out of its socket. It isn't held in at all. That means that if you want to move the trackball (I often use it with my laptop and/or put it on my leg), or if you happen to push it off the desk or your two year old gets to it, then the ball often falls out and rolls off into a corner. Bit annoying.

The other thing that niggles is the lack of scroll wheel or third button. Certainly you can configure it how you like (I have both buttons acting as middle mouse, with both buttons plus Alt as scroll wheel), but it's never going to be as convenient as a third button or scroll wheel. There is also a bit of lag on the scrolling, so you have to roll and wait, roll and wait, rather than properly scrolling up and down. This is especially true in 3D modelling software, for example, where you are probably already holding down another modifier key to alter what you want the ball to control (e.g. panning, zooming, rotating).

All in all, this is a great trackball with a couple of minor flaws. The Logitech Marble Mouse is that bit better in my opinion because it covers those two flaws. Why neither the LMM or this one have a scroll wheel is beyond me, but at least the LMM has a couple of spare buttons to make things a little easier.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The best trackball you can buy
This Kensington trackball is such a great design and space saver and easy to clean too, sure its missing the mouse wheel but thats not a problem when you get used to it and its not the best with games better for the office or web browsing.

For those who are fed up with rubbish wireless mouses, this is a must have.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Smoothest trackball ever
I have used Kensington trackballs for years (this optical one will be my 5th), they occupy less space than a mousepad, the mouse cable does not get pulled about and they do everything a standard two-button mouse could do, only better.

The older mechanical units are fine when you first get them but as time goes by the small rubber wheels get clogged with dust and fluff, which can be cleaned off as first but in time the rubber of the wheels turns to black goo and then the whole mechanism will stop working. If the rubber wheels could have been replaced, then perhaps I would never have bought the optical unit? I expect this trackball never to wear out and therefore be my last.

This optical trackball is really very much lighter to use than the mechanical ones but the mass of the ball seems about the same and I can go whizzing from one side of the screen to the other, letting the trackball do all the work.

It is equally useable with the left hand as well as the right and always being in the same position on the desktop, it makes for a strainfree existence.

Worth the money? Absolutely, I would recommend this device anytime. If it was wireless it would be even better.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A better trackball
I bought this from Amazon to replace a similar mechancial ball, which was my second one of these. After having problems with dirt affecting the rollers on the mechanical ones, the optical one is much better. It picks up some dust but that never prevents the ball working, it just makes it jerky and can be easily cleaned. It is very reliable and fits the hand well. It was worth the money.
