Editorial Review: Product Description: Wireless 802.11b/gTurbo Mode 32-bit PCI Adapter Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Weak range, rubbish utility, but easy installWhen I read the reviews here, I expected something quite good. I received the product within 2 days of ordering, which was great! I put it in, simply slotting in the item. Turned it on, installed the utility on the disc included. Simple. Tried to use it, I get near-to-no signal to my router, one just strong enough to find it, but not to connect. I fiddled around with it to no avail. Needless to say, it will be going back and I will be trying another one. I will continue to use my older one for now As an added note, I found the Utility program included with the hardware quite useless and rather annoying to use. Rating: - Great stuff...Had the same problems with my Belkin router, also Virgin Media don't like it on their system?? Very easy to install and run - took about 30 mins. Highly recommended. Rating: - Easy to install, great connectivity, great product.I have sky broadband and wanted to connect my desktop PC upstairs to the wireless network. I saw the 5 star reviews for this product and the cheap price and went ahead and bought one. It took me 10 minutes to install the card in the machine and install the software on XP. Wireless signal reception is 100% for my sky broadband connection and it also picked up 3 signals from surrounding houses...! Superb product at a very reasonable price. Rating: - Simple, easy, and it worksI have just moved over to Virgin Cable broadband from Orange. As such, my 5 1/2 Dell Inspirion 2350 desktop has to be moved over to wireless or else I will have to run a wire half way around the house. I bought this wireless card on the 5 star recommendation here and elsewhere. It took 4 days to arrive, and I fitted it today. Total fitting time was about 1 hour as I took the time to have a clean-up as well. In reality it is a 20 minute job. Cover off, blanking plate out, carefully slot in the card, and screw it down with the one screw from the blanking plate. As others have said the airel is a wire of about 1 meter and a stubby black airel on the end of about 3 inches. Cd- ROM in, and 5 minutes later, my old machine has a perfect wireless connection. The signal strength is classified as 'very good' and it is downloading 7.1Mb from the Virgin 10 Mb package. This report is based on one hours use, but for under £11 can one really ask any more than it is beautifully simple, works perfectly? Rating: - Flawless Hardware With Slightly Flawed SoftwareAfter changing my ISP I received a new wireless ADSL router (Siemens Gigaset SE587) and then found it necessary to replace an old wireless network card on a very old desktop PC. It was for this reason I was looking for a budget priced PCI WiFi card which supported the newer security levels (WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK) and would also provide a strong and reliable signal strength. After reading the unanimous 5 star reviews for this product I considered the Edimax EW-7128g WiFi Card a safe bet! MY FINDINGS ------------- The card only comes with the remote antenna. Its not a problem, just a point of clarification (see my customer image for details). Before installing the card I downloaded the latest Windows XP device driver from the Edimax website (I would always recommend downloading driver and/or firmware when available as standard practice). After installing the card I used the Edimax Configuration Tool which was extremely easy to use. However, the following day after switching the PC back on the network card wouldn't connect to the network without me first re-selecting the network and entering the security details. After testing this several times I realised the settings weren't being saved after each reboot (OS Windows XP Professional). I logged a support call via the Edimax website (Saturday evening). I then decided configure the network card in the same way I have configured all my other network cards on other computers using the standard Microsoft Zero Configuration Tool (Windows XP/Vista). On this occasion the network security details were saved. The Edimax Configuration Tool is still useful for identifying other networks in the area and confirming the channels they are using. As a result of this information I experimented with several recommended standard wireless channels on the network and improved the signal strength from 75% to 99% (at both strengths the card consistently performed at a connection speed of 54Mbps). I received a technical response via email from Edimax on the morning of the next business day (Monday). The solution was different from mine so I followed it up with a telephone call and promptly spoke to same support person who had responded via email. She was both helpful and friendly. However, I stuck with my original solution as it was working. I have been using the card for 10 days and it has performed both reliably and to a high standard. Originally, I was going to break with ranks and award the Edimax WiFi card with a respectable 4 star rating due to the software configuration issue. However, the prompt, helpful and friendly response has compensated for this initial shortfall.
