Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: If you're after something a bit more magical than the current crop of gory, torturous horror movies, this Guillermo del Toro Collection might be just what you're looking for. Del Toro weaves together dark fairy tales with bleak reality in each of these three movies, creating films which are clever, beautiful and incredibly haunting. Although del Toro has made more high profile movies--Hellboy and Blade 2, specifically--his Spanish language movies are clearly his real passion. More personal than his superhero movies, each of these films has something to say. The earliest of the movies is Cronos. Released in 1993, it's a story of family loyalties as well as alchemy and vampirism. 2001's The Devil's Backbone sees a group of orphans battling for survival in a world populated by bullies and ghosts, with war torn Spain providing a stunning background; while Pan's Labyrinth, released in 2006 to critical acclaim, mingles real life politics and social drama with fantasy and magic to create a masterpiece. Pan's Labyrinth won three Oscars, though it also deserved the other three it was also nominated for. With each successive film, Del Toro's filmmaking has grown ever more mature and powerful, and this boxset perfectly showcases an incredible talent.--Sarah Dobbs Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Blown away by this filmI was introduced to the director of this film (Guillermo del Toro) by a friend who told me to watch "The Orphanage". I bought it and was more than a little perturbed to see it was all in Spanish!! I couldn't see myself watching a foreign language film like some haughty-taughty art critic, so nearly returned it before watching it... HOW GLAD I DID NOT! "The Orphanage" happens to now be one of my favourite films of all time, and a real two-finger salute to all these tacky gore fest horror movies spilling out of hollywoodland at the moment. Any way, to the point (I know this isn't a review on the Orphanage!), because I liked that film so much, I decided to get Pan's Labyrinth since I enjoyed the directing style and the cinematography. All in all, this film also flies up to the peaks of my list of fave films... it is a BEAUTIFUL film visually, unique story, wonderfully played out, well acted (I guess! considering it's en espanol!) - if you appreciate films for their content, the thought that goes in to realising an idea in to film and are comfortable with a fantastical story line - you will simply LOVE this film Rating: - A Truly Brilliant Dark,Captivating Film!!!!!, that will blow you away! - it will stay with you long after the film is finished! The story is Set in the Spanish Civil War Around a young girl called Ofelia She finds herself in the middle of a real fairytale as she copes with her new life living with her very pregnant mother and her stepfather (a captain in the army who is a brutal man). Her mother is firmly under her stepfathers control, and the whimsical and dreaming step-daughter is terrified. So she is befriended by Mercedes, a woman on the side of the resistance who works at the house she lives in. With her mother bedridden, Ofelia wanders outside to follow a fairy through the ancient stone structure called Pan's Labyrinth Here Ofelia discovers a faun who tells her that she is the living princess of the underworld, and thus must claim her rightful place on the throne by completing a series of tasks. As Ofelia works through her tasks which are not easy tasks, her situation becomes more desperate as her mother becomes more ill during the pregnancy and the camp comes under threat from rebels... Ofelia, strikes a deal with the Faun to make her mother feel better again. Reality and fantasy unfold to a twistingly finale. I watched this film when it came on the television was not sure what it was about and found it a truly Ultimately Captivating Film Pure brilliance!!! I now own it on DVD I will be keeping an eye out for guillermo del toro's other works!!! Rating: - Great FilmGot it free with my Samsung Blu Ray player, and it's a truly great film! Very very very good, i loved it. Rating: - StunningThere is just one word to describe this movie, stunning. Hollywood just ca't make movies as good as this. I can't believe some people are giving it one star. Rating: - Another Optimum POOR QUALITY dvd.The actual movie ^Pans Labyrinth^ I would give 4 Stars. It is a stunning film. But Optimum Release 2 disc DVD I give 1 star and that^s generous. The first disc buzzes extremely loudly while loading and for at leasr 30 minutes of the film (1st disc), the extras (2nd disc) buzzes just as horrendously throughout. I would of said well it^s just A faulty dvd. But the problem is that this is the 4th title I^ve bought by Optimum release all they have always been faulty, every single one.! They nearly all buzz loudly throughout or have picture faults. As I realy want a good copy of this movie I^m going to have to buy the ntsc version by a different distributer.
