I was quite taken with the DSM 330 after seeing it's likeness on the DivX website. I don't particular want to convert all my videos to DivX because I think it's a time consuming low quality process.

Even so the DSM 330 seems to have rave reviews.

With that I looked around for others and found the DSM 510 from D-Link.

There are mixed reviews. In the past I understand it's used other AV servers such as Nero. Now it supports VIIV (but you need a VIIV certified PC and VIIV certified router). It should however connect to Windows Media Player 11 through Media Sharing.

Here's my experiences. It will connect to my N95, but won't connect to Windows Media Player. WMP sees the device, and despite allowing the device through, DSM still failed to see. I ended up using the TwonkyVision UPnP AV server which works.

The menus are slow. Downloading is slow. I think the Wireless must be knackered or something.

It will stream audio MP3's, and believe it or not AAC files from the iTunes store (though it is unclear whether these are the iTunes plus files or not - bear in mind it takes around 30 seconds to open an AAC file in any even).

Playing my MPEGs recorded off the TV is a disaster. The thing breaks up every few seconds. DivXs don't suffer from the same problem - though they are four times smaller.

If that wasn't bad enough, the menu is very slow. Timing the same access between this and my Nokia N95 to the same server, resulted in this taking 10 seconds to access a folder, compared to instant connection for my N95.

Very disappointing.
