Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - best software I've ever bought
I found the other review so unfair that I decided to write. I bought this CD from Amazon about a year ago. Since then I have never had any problems with it at all. This program is for XP and older versions of windows. It doesn't work for Vista.

Also this OEM version works perfectly for creating an image of your operating system but it doesn't backup or synchronize your personal documents. The full version of Acronis 9 does but the OEM doesn't.

The reason why it is called an image is because it is a single file with a .tib extension. The .tib file is about %40 the size of your original C drive and is an exact copy of C.

If you have you operating system on C and your personal files on D, and all you want is to create an image of C and reload it when needed, this program is right for you. Some of you might say, "why would I need to create an image of windows? I can simply reinstall windows".

Yes you can but reinstalling windows, installing all the programs and doing all the small changes to the programs requires a lot of time, usually 2 to 3 hours. With Acronis you can load the C image in 4 minutes. You will never spend time to fix problems in windows.

I used to spend hours on fixing windows. Now I don't.

If you don't know how to divide your personal files from operating system read on.

Your operating system and all programs that you install are located in the C partition of your hard drive. Normally your 'My Documents' folder is also in the C drive. What we want to do is to divide the hard drive into two sections (partitions) as C and D and then move your My Documents folder to D. This way when we replace C with its earlier copy (its image) we won't have to worry about personal documents since they will remain untouched in D.

The program I suggest to partition (divide) you hard drive is a free and open source program called gparted. Google gparted and download the "gparted live CD" from sourceforge. It will be an iso file. This means you need to burn the iso to a CD.

You can burn it with any burning program that can burn iso files. If you don't have any, go to download.com and download deepburner which is a free program. With your new gparted CD you can boot your PC and partition your hard drive but first you must make a copy of your personal documents.

You can copy your personal documents to an external hard drive, a DVD or a flash drive. If you have very few files you can simply copy your entire My Documents folder by hand. If your My Documents folder is too big your computer might freeze. You could copy your documents piece by piece to avoid freezing but the correct way of doing this is by using a program.

Unfortunately this oem edition of Acronis doesn't do that job. I use a free program called syncback that I found at download.com.

When you have a backup of your personal documents boot your PC with your gparted CD and divide your hard drive in two sections. Leave 20GB for C and leave the rest to D.

To move your "my documents" folder to D, create a new folder in D and call it My Documents. Right click on your original My Documents folder and change the target to the new folder that you just created.

Also you can move you favorites folder to D too. Because there should be nothing left in C that you would mind losing when replacing C with its images. To move your favorites folder, open windows explorer, find the favorites folder, right click and drag somewhere inside D.

When you create an image of C you need to save this image file (.tib file) somewhere. I save it on D in a new folder inside My Documents folder. Aldo I backup D to an external hard drive.

In short:
1. I have windows and programs installed in C drive.
2. I have C images and My Documents in D drive (I create these with acronis 9 OEM)
3. I have an external hard drive where I put copies of D (I create these with syncback)

When you create an image of C do it from inside windows by running acronis. But when you reload an image to replace the existing windows do it outside windows. You need to use the CD that you will buy here to boot your PC. This way windows will not start. You PC will boot from CD and a version of Acronis will run from CD. It will ask you where the image file is. Then it will use that image to replace your entire C drive. When it is replaced everything will be exactly the same like when you created the image.

If you want to update you C image after you have installed new programs, don't do this to the current windows. First reload the existing image file. Now you are back to day one of your windows. Then install the new programs and then create a new image. This way the age of your image files will always be less than a day.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - No better than MSbackup
No better than MS backup really. Then functions have been stunted and all the software does is tell you what you can do with the full version.

Given 1 star because you may be able to use this to get a cheaper upgrade price. However I wanted this for an old win98 computer I have and the new version is not supported on win98.

Save your money.
