![]() Rating: - Not the easiest thing to set up!First things first, I am not a technophobe. Nor am I a computer whizz kid. I place myself in the middle, Mr Average when it comes to all things that require input from the National Grid to get them whirring. I bought this drive so that my main computer would not get bogged down with the storage demands of thousands of high quality music tracks (the high quality bit refers to the file size, not the quality of this author's musical tastes). On connecting the drive to the computer via USB, the PC would not boot into Windows (I have good ole XP). Disconnecting the drive solved the problem. Bit of a small problem that, having to manually plug in the drive every time you wanted to use it, I thought. After trawling through the Western Digital website I came across a fix. Apparently with many PCs, the USB Legacy has to be disabled in order for ones PC to boot into Windows when the drive has been attached. Quite a technical thing to do when these drives are supposed to be Plug and Play. The good news is that I managed to circumvent this problem, so 99.9% of the Amazon buying population should be able to do the same. Since connecting the drive, I've had no problems whatsoever - it really is a massive amount of disk space 1TB! Recommended! Rating: - Great Hard DriveThis My Book 2 Home Edition is a great hard drive with good quality at a nice price. I connect it to my Imac G5 using firewire and the transfer and streaming speeds are fine. It runs really quiet and if you leave it on all the time then it will spin down after being idle for a while as well as turning on and off with your computer. The light on the front is only really annoying in the evening as its in my bedroom but you just have to push the power on the back for it to completely turn off. Very happy with this product! Rating: - Good drive but no eSATAWhile this drive is now fitted perfectly next to my base station and the large capacity of the drive suits me well for storing photos, music samples and data, the eSATA capabilities of this drive worked once and then no longer. While firewire is fast enough for my needs if you really don't need the faster transfer speeds (for example for video) then I would suggest you should save your money on both the cheaper drive and not having to buy an extra SATA cable and go for the drive without eSATA. Rating: - Dodgy eSATA connectionTried two different drives, delivered a week apart. Both worked fine with USB but the first one would not connect at all via eSATA and the second one would only do so if the plug was forced very hard into the socket. Looks like they were part of a bad batch. Be prepared. After wasting so much time, have ordered a Seagate drive instead. Rating: - Good Storage SolutionGot a room full of DVD's. These are great for storing all your films. Annoying LED at the front is the only gripe. Not a great system storage bacup as this is just too slow. But overall perfomance it does exactly what you want for a home storage solution. More than four of these connected will slow down your PC as the resonse time for your PC to check on the intergrity of the drives is painful. But all in all not a bad solution and a good price for what you get.
