Rating: - WOW.Once i started i could not stop. It is a wondeful book that conveys the emotions of world war one it such a convincing way that i was literally moved to tears. It is a must for anyone who is interested in world war one in anyway. You will be totally draw into the book and amazed at the detail and the stark honesty of Vera Brittain. A fantastic biography by a fantastic woman. Rating: - stick with it, an eye opening booki read this book for my alevel exam last year - my friends all thought i was strange due to the vast size of the book. but i am so glad that i stuck with it and read it! It made me feel humble, young people during the war , my age, had to do so much and people of my generation take things today for granted! yet back then people were glad to help, it was their duty. she went through so much at such a young age. i feel lucky to have experienced part of her life through her eyes. Please read this book and you will appreciate everything you take for granted! Rating: - A brilliant moving autobiographyThis is one of the most fasinating books about the first World War that I have ever read. It combines the history of the War with emotions and opinions that are all very moving to the reader. I strongly recommend reading this book, it will certaintly effect your attitude to the events of the 1st World War. Rating: - Stick to Birdsong!I know this book is a 'classic' and is about a terrible time in history and I fully understand that many people like it (my Mum thought it was the best book she had ever read), but unfortunately for me I did not appriciate it at all. I found it too wordy and difficult to understand at times. I thought Vera Brittain could have quite easily said all she wanted to say in half as many words, which, in my opinion, would have been much better. Also, I found it difficult to relate to the main character (the author), as I simply could not stand her! The more I read, the more I found her at times to be arrogant, pompous and extremely annoying! I admit the overall content was quite interesting, but it could have been presented in a much more accessible way. Perhaps this is just me, and it may also have something to do with the fact that I have to write a 2500 word essay on it for my A-level English course, but I'm sorry, it is heavily depressing and very boring. Birdsong - now there is a REALLY GOOD WW1 book! Rating: - A must read bookIf you only read one book about the First World War, read this one. The true horror of the war is detailed, and it really makes you think about the loss and sacrifice. I read this book first of all studying for my History degree, and I have re-read it many times since then. Vera's life and what happened to her, and her friends has stayed with me always, and I have now encouraged other people to read it too.
