Rating: - DULL DREARY and A DREAMERWhat a dissapointment!!! This was not the adventure book I had hoped for. This is NO DRIVING OVER LEMONS!! Commutting back and forward to renovate your house, is no great adventure. And taking FIVE YEARS before you move there. Hmmmm I think this is someone who saw this as an opportunity to write a book more than start a new life. Only interesting as I know the limousin region. Not at all funny. Characters sounded intersting but vague descriptions..poorly written...... Rating: - One of the best books I have ever readThis is my dream to live in France so this was the reason for buying this book and this book is just what you need to balance the dream and the reality. The book is very well written giving realistic accounts of the pleasant and the not so pleasant realities of renovating a property to complete your dream life in France. Taking into account all the pitfalls and the devious and sometimes awkward neighbours as well as the struggles with the language and local dialect this book still has me wanting to aspire to my dream. Well done Richard Wiles for putting together such a pleasant and inspiring book to read. Rating: - Bon CourageAn enjoyable and occasionally humurous read. It is well written and easy to read, I couldn't put it down. As someone about to embark on a similar change of life, it was facinating, and I hope to have learnt from the author's experiences- both good and bad! I just hope Richard Wiles is busy writing a sequel. I cant wait to find out how life is following their permanent move to the Limousin. Rating: - Great ReadI greatly enjoyed this book but then I may be biased as I grew up in Limousin and originally bought this book to see how the region was going to be portrayed. I felt it was depicted with sincerity despite some liberties taken by the author with some local expressions, (I am not talking about the 'Trompette de La Mort' which are delicious by the way), and also his own interpretation of local custom. But then, if the author and his wife got everything right all the time it would not be so funny and one can imagine how much of a headache the whole project must have been but also how much this was all worth it. After reading this book, it leaves you wanting to see the barn and meet them as they seem genuine good neighbours. I wish them all the best with their lama breading and settling in Limousin. Rating: - compellingAs someone who has lived the French property renovation dream/nightmare myself, I found this book compelling, hilarious and relatable. What Richard Wiles took on far exceeds my own project in its challenges and disasters, and his book should be read by anyone with the slightest ambition to buy a place in France. Take a dose of reality from Bon Courage and see if you think you still have what it takes to overcome the obstacles involved!
