Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Sleeping Beauty
OK, this film isn't as good as some other Disney films like Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio or Aladdin, but it is still good and rather amazing.

Film and computers weren't brought together well into the 80s at least, yet some of the animation in this film is worthy of being in a modern Disney cartoon. The animation in the Fairies giving baby Sleeping Beauty her gifts looks like a computer graphic.

The storyline is given a more complex and interesting storyline, but the romance is a bit silly.

Last but not least; which country is this film set in. I've come up with a few possible settings: Scotland, England, France, Russia, Poland, Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia or Rusaia. Or is it a mixed up Europia? Walt must have brought the secret to the grave :-p

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Thoughts of a humble animator
"Sleeping Beauty", is a defining film in Walt Disney's career, breathtaking in it's visual scope and musical score. Released in 1959, the same year as "Ben Hur", "Sleeping Beauty" shares the same panoramic screen format as the former (sadly only available on the collectors DVD addition. The normal edition uses a 4:3 pan and scan screen ratio). "Sleeping Beauty" doesn’t disappoint the eye when it comes to art direction. Braking away from the traditional Disney look, it is truly one of the most artful films of Disney’s impressive film history. The music too is a brake from tradition, no "high ho, hi ho" lyrics to hum along to, "Seeping Beauty" borrows Tchaikovsky's score to beautiful effect. It is in every respect a film that is different to the norm, owing as much to Fantasia as its fairy tale counterparts, Snow White and Cinderella. And here is the catch, because "Sleeping Beauty" holds very little fascination to an audience made up of young children. True, the central story is very simple, but the films extended narrative does little to help you empathize for any one of the characters and it is this fault that makes "Sleeping Beauty" come of cold, despite it's brilliance. Valuable screen time is wasted developing the three fairies intro a comedy trio and the result is a story that is centered upon it's secondary characters instead of it's hero, Price Phillip and heroine, Aurora. It's a shame because the film boasts wonderful scenes, startling imagery and maybe the most scary of all the Disney’s villains.

All in all, a groundbreaking film that hold up every bit as much as it did forty-four years ago, it's flaws only more apparent by it's brilliance. Oh, and the animation isn't bad either.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fantastic!
I love this film. It is one of my faveourite disney films (up there with Mulan and Aladdin). The music is wonderful and the old style animation gives it that magic touch that takes you back to your childhood days. This film has great characters (check out the Merryweather, the plump and moody fairy godmother out of the 3 that attempt to protect Aurora from evil).
Speaking of evil, this film is full of it! Lucky it is also jam packed with humour and has a good happy ending! There is the evil Maleficent, a bitter and powerful witch who scared the life out of me as a kid! She's not evil in a "Urselur from the Little Mermaid" sort of way, in no way is she comedic! She is simply dark and disturbing! There is a dragon, an element of the film that also scared me when i was little. And no, it isnt the big but very dumb kind you see in most kids films, its a propper one!
The imagery in this film is beautiful but many things like Maleficent and her castle, the goblins, the fire and the thorns are very dark and errie which is unusual for a Disney film. The goblins dance and chant with unholy relish and did u see the scene where she follows the ball of yellow light through the towers?! Its terrifying! The music that accompanies the scary scenes is what gives it that touch that sends a chill down your spine. I feel more scared watching this than watching a horror film of some description! It just gets me because I remember feeling frightened watching it as a child! This is why I love the film! It drwas you in and makes you acctually feel genuinely happy when all ends well. I mean, did anyone really care about Cinderella getting her prince? Don't get me wrong, I love that film also, but, the ending is cheesey and predictable. This is the case with all kids films, including Sleeping Beauty, BUT! SB gets you so involved and scared of the evil goings on that you are desperate for it end with a splash of cheese and a few tears of joy. Its one of the best, if you havn't seen it, why? Its a classic! Buy it now!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - 3 stars for what could have been 5.
The film is visually stunning and beautiful which is why it was made in widescreen which was very advanced for 1959. So WHY WHY WHY is this DVD in full pan and scan screen when I know the movie was made in the widescreen format?? (It even says so in the 'making of' documentry) One of the reasons I bought this movie on DVD was to see it in widescreen. I wish i saved my money I've got the pan& scan VHS anyway. The extras though are quite good. The making of feature is very informative and the virtual galleries are very well made. The movie itself is brilliant thanks to the impressive art. (which we can only see half of)

Disney can You swap my DVD for a WIDESCREEN one!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The best fairy tale ever
This has to be my favourite disney film of all time. There is something about the old-style animation that I like better than the newer films. The musical score is fantastic, and the story is the epitome of fairy tales, with a beautiful princess and her prince on his trusty steed that saves her. The three good fairies are like comic old-maid aunts, and the evil Maleficent is truly a black hearted villian. Highly recommended!
