![]() Rating: - Gives a light to understanding when diagnosis is difficultI used to work with children and adults with Autistm and Aspergers, and it was recommended to me by a primary teacher. I have a child who has had umpteen assessments and tests, no diagnosis, and who I know displays bits and pieces of the whole range of "labels" that everyone is keen to tape on their forehead! This author will make a clearer path for our thinking, for those of us who have "done the rounds" with hospital depts, psychologist meetings, special needs co-ordinators, school heads, GP's etc The book is particularly geared towards and recommended for teachers too. The language although Americian, nevertheless de-mystifies and is accesibile to all. There are some tools for help you in your thinking with a particular child. Each syndrome is explained well. The other explanations and references of how it is for the children as they are experiencing their symptoms are nothing short of miraculous! A breath of fresh air and a true aid to understanding and communicating with, and getting the best deal for our special children. Hope for those of you who have run out of ideas, lost the plot, or are falling into dispair! Also ideas/tips for how to get the best out of children "in the mix". Rating: - V good - clear and conciseA good, positive and informative book about these complex children. Plenty of helpful insights. The chapter about sensory difficulties was the most informative in this context, as sensory issues are so often missed out from books which are from a purely psychiatric perspective. A bit too "American" in that the USA education system is the model used, but most readers of this kind of book will have got used to that! A lot of the medications discussed are not available or used at all in the UK, which is a bit misleading for the UK readership. An addendum would have helped, here. As both a parent of a child in the syndrome mix and a professional working with these children, I shall be recommending this book to parents and teachers.
