![]() Rating: - A must have for TCM acpuncturists interested in depression.Schnyer DiplAc, an acupuncturist and Senior Research Associate at the University of Arizona, and Allen PhD, an Associate Professor also at the University of Arizona, have united Western and Traditional Chinese medicine in this useful and fascinating manual. The result is a comprehensive overview of depression within both systems, and an easy to follow methodology for the evaluation and treatment (by TCM acupuncture). This manual covers every aspect of treating depression from dealing with the acute emergency situation, to the chronic severely depressed patient. It offers useful ways of developing appropriate treatment principles and guidance in selecting good point prescriptions. It covers how to assess the risk of suicide and when to make prompt referrals. Through the use of case studies it describes the causes and progression of depressive symptoms from a Chinese medicine perspective. It outlines each specific pattern of imbalance in depression and how to differentiate the signs and symptoms according to Chinese medicine. This book has the added value of addressing issues around research within Chinese medicine, outlining the advantages and disadvantages of different research designs. The authors' pilot study is documented and is offered as a successful model for acupuncture research. The book examines this topic 'holistically' in that it deals with the patients and the treatment as whole systems. It has great relevance for modern clinical experience in the West, where patients often complain of depressive symptoms. I like the case study approach, which I think, is a useful reminder that we are dealing with people and not disease patterns. I found this book very useful during the writing up of my MSc dissertation. It has great potential to inform both clinical practice and acupuncture research.
