![]() Rating: - Not MY best cup of tea, but...This book didn't exactly meet MY needs, but that said, it's a very broad one. It covers different topics, like PHP, ASP, Access Database, MY SQL, elementary Flash-ing (on the fly, but still), etc. I have only had time to look deeply into the access/asp-part, and that doesn't give the hungry one much to chew on. For my own sake, I'd liked more, more examples, more on how to pass and receive between Flash and the ASP-page. Maybe I am just not the target audience... Rating: - Potentially a good book but not as good as other FoE booksI bought this book on the strength of the other Friends of Ed books I already have. All of the other FoE books I own, have a clear guide to what you are doing, how to do it and how and why it works. While I haven't read all of the book (I was most interested in the ASP and Database integration sections) I found the sections useful as long as you do not have any problems. Because the book does not describe why something is done and how it can be adapted to work with your own projects, I found it a real let down. The Chapters I read seem to be more like an instruction manual rather than an educational or reference book. There is no help at all with the JavaScript integration Toolkit. The book just tells you to do X, Y and Z but not WHY or HOW IT WORKS! I realise that the author can't write everything but should have gone into greater details with this section. After looking on the FoE website and Forums for assistance I have found that I am not in the minority with the problems I have faced. If you are looking to buy this book for learning Flash / database integration, I would suggest you dont. Rating: - Unique. There's loads of books on Flash - most aimed at designers (read arty types). There's some books on ActionScript (eg O'Reilly's) that are a combination of a very long winded introduction to programming (the assumption being that Flash users are designers and not developers) followed by over-wordy holding-hands introduction to putting ActionScript to work. This book, however, is unique. If you've never done any programming before, it has a pretty good crash course in using ActionScript as a first language and (some) OO principles. If you're a developer just wanting to know enough Flash to use ActionScript, it caters for that too. Then it gets into the meat - using just about any back-end processing you can think of - ASP, PHP, Generator, XML - wow, this is a great introduction to all these technologies, taking you to the future of Flash - as a dynamic front-end for server driven applications (ecommerce, databases etc). One caveat - there are some silly typos in some of the source code examples, eg on page 325: open("index2.html", "new", "width=500, height=200"); Clearly there are two missing quotation marks. As this was just a single line example in the book, it looks like they just typed it in, rather than cut-and-paste from actual code. No doubt the longer examples are from tested code, so should be OK. Rating: - Great, Great! The flash action script book of all times.I started with this book and was amazed at how easy "Friends of Ed" made flash action script. It answered all by questions about asp, php, generator and a lot more. I am designer myself and this book was great a help to me. I'll keep it next to my desk now for reference. BUY IT NOW, you will use this book a lot.
