Calls for the creation of an ombudsman to protect homeowners from sub-standard new houses are intensifying after concerns emerged over the independence of the biggest warranty provider.
Oliver Colvile, the Conservative MP who chairs an all-party parliamentary group for new builds, said that he was seeking a meeting with Gavin Barwell, housing minister, to promote the idea.
His intervention came as it emerged that the National House Building Council, which provides warranties for new homes, pays millions of pounds a year to builders.
The existence of such payments has renewed concern over the impartiality of the NHBC, which provides warranties and insurance for more than 1.6 million homes, representing about 80 per cent of the warranties market.

moved into a property (sorry it is not a home) built by t.wimpey 2010-2011, plasterboard continues to fall off of walls and has done every single year. we have really bad problems with mould in a number of properties all the time, we have things that have been falling apart from day one. there is a lack of insulation in all boundary walls to each property, lack of soundproofing between each one, all the building companies employees do is laugh! they think its hilarious. and say “what do you expect from taylor wimpey”. nhbc confirmed they did not check any of the properties didn’t even come near them. So who is responsible for this fiasco? we pay for “QUALITY HOMES”, we get shelters, junk.
